In 2008, citizens of Brownwood voted and approved a referendum to use $6 million in funding through the Brownwood EconomicDevelopment Corporation to bring a new sports complex, Aquatic Center, and provide a new home for the Senior Citizens Center. $2 million of the original referendum went to fund this project while a grant from the Texas PArk and Wildlife Department of $500,000 was split between this project and the new sports complex. The construction of the pool was overseen by Sunbelt Pool while the bath house was constructed by Fain Construction.
With the attendance of the Camp Bowie Family Aquatic Center being at or near capacity during its regular hours, the city has been unable to open lap lane swimming during normal operating hours.
